Malta International Airport has been certified with the highest 5-Star COVID-19 Safety Rating, by international air transport rating agency Skytrax.

This Safety Accreditation is regarded as a global benchmark for defining safe travel assurance, and a 5-Star Rating is a top recognition of the effectiveness of the hygiene and safety measures introduced by Malta International Airport to protect customers and staff against the spread of COVID-19.

Reacting to the news, Malta International Airport CEO Alan Borg affirmed, “coming at a time when we are easing into the restart of tourism, this 5-star rating reassures us that we are well positioned to give incoming guests a safe welcome to the Maltese islands.”

Going on to thank the airport team and stakeholders for working hard to provide consistently high levels of safety and security along the airport journey, he added that these are “doubtlessly more important than ever as we seek to restore consumer confidence in the travel industry.”

“The achievement of this coveted industry rating does not mean that we will be resting on our laurels. As we brace ourselves for busier summer days, we also remain committed to keep evolving the airport experience by taking on board the expert advice provided by Skytrax and focusing on certain areas of operation highlighted in the audit report which may become increasingly more challenging to manage as traffic continues to pick up,” Mr Borg continued.

The COVID-19 audit was conducted in May 2021, evaluating over 175 safety protocols introduced by Malta International Airport in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to enhance customer and staff safety. The audits include assessment of the airport’s implementation of health, hygiene, and safety measures in accordance with the recommendations of the ICAO Council’s Aviation Recovery Task Force and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) Aviation Health Safety Protocol.
