HSBC Malta will once again join other HSBC global sites to mark Earth Hour and will be switching off lights to show support for our planet at its buildings in Qormi, Valletta and Swatar.

HSBC has been a high-profile supporter of the Earth Hour movement since 2009, organising and supporting a number of such events in conjunction with the many countries around the globe that make up the HSBC Group.

“Through our HSBC Malta Foundation, we focus on creating a sustainable future that leaves a positive impact on our society, environment and economy,” says HSBC Malta CEO Simon Vaughan Johnson.

Commenting on the initiative, he adds, “HSBC Group has been working relentlessly on shaping its Corporate Sustainability agenda for future generations. HSBC Group will achieve this by ensuring our operations are net zero by 2030 and by aligning our financed emissions to achieve net zero by 2050 or sooner. With this ambition in mind, we have been very active in driving initiatives aligned with this strategy here in Malta. A little effort made by each and every one of us can translate into a significant global benefit.”

Each year, this activity has a different theme, and this year’s theme is Speaking for Nature, highlighting the fact that humans are responsible for the environment, and only we have the power to be the voice for nature and to protect it.

This year’s Earth Hour will take place on Saturday 27th March between 20:30 and 21:30, and thanks to the coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Planning local entities such as HSBC Malta, the Auberge de Castille, the Triton Fountain, the Parliament building, several Ministries, Local Councils, gardens and other public buildings will be turning off lights for a full hour.

Malta will be joining the rest of the world in raising awareness on problems related to excessive and unsustainable energy consumption, which bring with them several negative impacts, such as air pollution and wasted resources.
