Michael Farrugia MASP

Michael Farrugia, Deputy Chief Executive (Beverage Business) at Simonds Farsons Cisk plc, has said that he hopes the transformation of The Brewhouse will lead to further awareness on the industrial heritage of Malta.

His comments came after The Brewhouse project with lead architects Ritchie*Studio was named as the winner of the Rehabilitation and Conservation Award at the Malta Architecture and Spatial Planning (MASP) Awards organised by the Planning Authority last week.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Farrugia said that this was a “very special project” for Simonds Farsons Cisk.

He remarked that the company is normally used to building breweries, and not regenerating old ones.

“We’re very proud of the transformation that’s happened and we hope it will inspire, raise the bar, and give more awareness to the industrial heritage that our country has a lot to be proud of,” Mr Farrugia continued.

Inaugurated back in June together with Trident Park, The Brewhouse came as part of an €86 million investment plan from Farsons Group. The Brewhouse is made up of business facilities together with food and beverage outlets, as well as a new store and brewery experience for visitors.

The jury noted that the regeneration of the historic Grade II Farsons Brewery is a landmark project that saw one of Malta’s finest, 20th century industrial buildings transformed in a mixed-use destination. While the undertaking was complex, the project resulted in a preservation and adaptation of both the internal and external fabric of the iconic building, for a new lease of life.
