The past couple of years have seen Malta’s start-up landscape welcome countless up-and-coming companies that have, in time, developed into fully-fledged and self-sufficient entities.

Government-support incentives, private initiatives, and a can-do attitude amongst the local start-up community have helped local and foreign enterprises choose the islands as their building grounds.

Having said that, here are six noteworthy Malta-based start-ups showing off some top-notch local talent:

Few

As taking care of one’s physical health gets more and more accessible, Few Co-Founder Jamie North thought it was high time we started paying as much attention to our mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Mr North’s app-based start-up looks to facilitate the maintenance of all three pillars of one’s health – all whilst making it easier for experts in said areas to reach their target audience.

FreeHour

With 90 per cent of Maltese youths following FreeHour on Instagram, using the FreeHour app, or doing both, this fast-growing local start-up has been turning heads in the local and international corporate spheres.

Just two years after its foundation, 20,000 students around Malta were already using the FreeHour app. Nowadays however, the platform also boasts a sizeable following on Instagram, something that was spurred forward by FreeHour’s COVID-19-induced pivot.

Matter Make

Steve DeMicoli’s start-up, Matter Make, is living proof that Malta is rife with up-and-coming talent ready to revolutionise the country’s architectural landscape.

The Founder says that, at its core, Matter Make is an “architectural design studio.” Having said that, he admits that it is “slightly unconventional, as the studio is also a factory for furniture, interiors, building components, and much more.”

Grocerly

CEO Luke Frendo’s start-up, Grocerly, is challenging users to rethink one of the few things everyone around the world has done – grocery shopping.

Plainly put, Grocerly has taken on the form of a grocery shopping app which allows users to shop based on recipes. So, after users browse through the app and find a recipe they’d like to cook, Grocerly generates a shopping list of ingredients and has them delivered right to their door.

Fyorin

Fyroin Co-Founder and CEO James Camilleri is on a mission to give SMEs around the world something they’ve been craving for a very long time – better business banking.

The fintech start-up does this through what is referred to as a Business Banking Network Scheme, that is, a platform which connects financial and non-financial providers from around the world through a single network.

Cashcow

Founded in 2017 by three Finns, Cashcow is an SEO-focused company specialising in sending valuable leads to a variety of partners. Since its foundation, this up-and-coming enterprise has grown to employ a team of more than 15 people spanning countless nationalities.

This digital start-up was first put under the spotlight thanks to its first website, Casino Professor, launched soon after the company’s foundation.
