Last September Genieve Grech quit her job after only one and a half months and describes this as “one of the biggest life lessons learnt this year,” saying that, in life, it is important to “know your worth and [not] settle” for anything unless you are sure that it is the right choice.

“It was devastating to leave without having another job aligned. It was something I never imagined myself doing. Yet there I was,” Ms Grech stated. Quitting a job without having another in hand is not the norm, however sometimes circumstances dictate putting your mental health first, for your own sake and those around you.

Taking such a step while also having important family commitments is an even bigger struggle. “I felt like a failure. I cried for hours after I resigned, knowing there’s no turning back,” she admitted, adding that she even “felt a bit selfish for not trying to push through.”

However “sometimes things don’t work. We need to accept that as humans we can’t fit in everywhere and not everyone can give us what we need,” Ms Grech stated.

Through her message Ms Grech wants to encourage people “to never stay where [they] are unhappy. To never get anxiety on Sunday because tomorrow is Monday and you really don’t want to go to work.” Sometimes, in such situations, it is important to take a step back, work on oneself first, before trying to push through.

This is exactly what she did. Indeed, she admitted that she “didn’t have the capacity to stay in that job and look for another job.” Therefore, she chose to take the lesson from this experience.

“Definitely one of my biggest life lessons this year. Know your worth and don’t settle. It was very hard at the time, but I swear it has made me a lot stronger,” she affirmed.

“Plus, if I stayed there, I wouldn’t be where I am now. And I really like where I am now. Employers will understand. The good ones will, anyway,” Ms Grech concluded.
