The recent IPCC climate report has been a talking point for many this week, shining a renewed light on the urgent climate crisis of our time and being described as ‘code red for humanity’.

The resounding message it puts across is the need for action – today before tomorrow. The report, which has found that it is “unequivocal” that human activity is warming the planet, predicts that temperatures will keep rising to worrying heights if world leaders do not come together to make deep and immediate cuts.

And it isn’t hard to believe, as local temperatures continue to surge, bringing heatwave upon punishing heatwave to bear on the islands, and our neighbouring countries continue to struggle with wildfires which are destroying vast swathes of agricultural land.

Likening the situation to the parable of the frog in the pot of boiling water – which is often used as a metaphor for people’s inability or unwillingness to react to to threats that arise gradually rather than suddenly – Rachel Falzon, Management Consultant at ReWired HR Consultants, shares her concern in a recent social media post.

“Already there has been so much hardship,” she writes, undoubtedly referring to the difficulties that have characterised recent months, owing not only to the pandemic but global events relating to climate change.

Considering the dire situation within the context of the business landscape, she notes that the “truth of the matter is that none of our businesses is going to matter very much down the road if we don’t start reversing the damage we have caused. Yesterday.”

Advocating for the importance of working together to overcome the crisis, she affirms, “never a better purpose or reason for collaboration than now.”
