Owen Micallef

Lidl Malta on Friday announced that Owen Micallef has been promoted to Director.

He had started his career with the leading retail chain in 2016 as Sales District Manager, showing leadership, dedication, and a deep understanding of the local market.

Afterwards, he was promoted to Sales Operations Manager in 2020, a position he held up until his latest appointment. During his time at the company, he also had a 10-month stint abroad in Germany and Italy, leading to his promotion to Director.

Prior to joining Lidl Malta, Mr Micallef had worked in marketing-related positions at Classic Group Ltd, Maltco Lotteries Limited, and Synergene Biotechnology.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree in Management from University of Malta.

Mr Micallef said that he is “incredibly proud” to have been named in the new role at Lidl Malta.

“The journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunities for growth and development the company has provided me with,” he added.

He affirmed that he is excited to collaborate with the rest of the team to work towards achievements, driving “further innovation and positive change within the company, reaping also positive impact” on the society Lidl Malta operates.

Founded in April 2008 with three stores, Lidl Malta has since expanded its network to 10 outlets spread across the Maltese Islands. Its head office is based in Burmarrad, and the company forms part of the Schwarz Group, a multinational group of companies that operates in the retail industry.

Over recent years, the company has opened a number of stores in Malta, and last week, reports indicated that Lidl Malta is trying to acquire a site in Żabbar, currently home to a Scotts supermarket. The Office for Competition within the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) has opened an in-depth investigation to assess whether the acquisition is in line with competition regulations.
