For operators in the hospitality sector, the 1st of June can’t come soon enough – the date when Malta opens its doors once more to incoming tourists after a prolonged period of diminished tourist activity.

And for many, it appears the light at the end of the tunnel is finally within reach. Mike Xuereb, owner of Hotel 19 Rooms in Valletta – and Amery House in Sliema which will launch this September – shares that after eight months of “patiently waiting for the ‘coefficient for travel’ to improve, based on more confidence and certainty, we are finally starting to see a pick-up in booking patterns. Happy Days!”

The hotel owner says that, aside from the commercial and financial need, “it is just nice to see guests in the hotel, that we can spoil and look after.”

During this quiet time, Mr Xuereb adds that the hotel has been busy working on its product, primarily focusing on improved sustainability, guest experiences and facilities for its patrons. “Still a long way to go but the journey is progressing to plan,” he shares.

Meanwhile, as the pace picks up at Hotel 19 Rooms, Mr Xuereb announced that his original project for a boutique hotel, called Amery House and located in Sliema, is gearing up to open this September.

“It’s awesome to see the project go from excavation to construction, finishing and now the looking into the furnishing and final touches,” he says, adding that the hotel will have 28 rooms, a great location and the same focus on service, sustainability, and authentic experiences for guests.
