Mdina restaurant Bacchus took to social media yesterday to announce the passing of owner and Managing Director Mario Vella Gatt.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mario Vella Gatt, the man who dedicated 45 years of his life to managing an exceptional venue – Bacchus,” the restaurant posted on Facebook.

Mr Vella Gatt opened the restaurant in August 1976, and Bacchus has been housing weddings, banquets, and hungry diners ever since.

Situated in the two chambers built by Grand Master De Redin in the 17th century, Bacchus has become popular for its unique atmosphere and ambiance.

“You finally reached the five stars and your memories will live on, and rest assured that we will use your wisdom and continue your legacy,” the post continued.

In honour of Mr Vella Gatt’s “great life achievement and passing”, the restaurant closed its doors yesterday, Monday 12th July, and Thursday 15th July.

The funeral mass will be held on Thursday 15th July at the Divine Mercy Sanctuary, San Pawl tat-Tarġa at 2pm.
