Sean Gravina

In an impassioned plea to decision-makers shared on social media, Sean Gravina, Head Chef and Creative Director at Crust Bakery, Bar & Bistro, called out the lack of a roadmap for Malta’s restaurant industry following the recent gradual relaxation of measures announced by Government.

“Families and children are suffering because their dad’s/mom’s businesses are at an edge,” he wrote, saying that while financial assistance for employees’ wages has been greatly appreciated, “the help is simply not enough and we need to open our doors.”

In his post, he shared a fellow restaurateur’s fears that if they are not able to open their doors again next month, they might not be able to open at all.

“We are asking for a simple roadmap and an opening date with restrictions and enforcement,” he said, adding that him and many other operators “are left shocked at the way we are being left alone clutching at straws.”

Mr Gravina added that many business owners are “suffering mentally and emotionally” at the lack of a clear direction for re-opening their businesses. “There must be a better, more sustainable way for the near future.”

He added “I can assure you that we are not winning the battle, we are losing a much bigger war and we are leaving businesses in despair with this attitude.”

With over 4,000 licensed bars and restaurants that employ mover 20,000 individuals, Mr Gravina stressed “health is important but our daily bread is also important.”
